Managing Director, Michelle Anderson-Sims and her team have been providing single serve Australian wines in reusable, recyclable plastic cups to consumers for the past nine years. With a focus on convenience, safety and quality, the Wine In A Glass range was the first of its kind in the Australian market and has extended across the country, with Michelle Anderson-Sims claiming, “anywhere glass can’t go - this product can”. Successfully breaking into the domestic food service industry, providing wine for events such as the Commonwealth Games, stadium grand finals and concerts as well as being stocked in 90% of private hospitals and found throughout the passenger transport sector from trains to planes.

In 2020, the COVID-19 restrictions had a massive impact on business, with 95% of all domestic business effected. Such a shutdown forced the company to look for other business avenues, with export markets presenting themselves as a viable opportunity, particularly due to the durability of the product and long shelf life. However, the company lacked the capacity and industry connections to reach potential buyers in these distant markets, an issue that was further exacerbated by their regional location, making attending networking events a struggle.

Solution

Since taking the leap and beginning to explore export opportunities, Wine In A Glass has participated in four FIAL-run Virtual Meet the Buyerevents with industry body, Wine Australia. This participation has allowed them to connect with a large portfolio of experienced buyers in various countries, from Sri Lanka to the Maldives. The online nature of these meetings provided a “brilliant opportunity” to showcase their products without having to physically access the relevant markets- a major positive when border closures restricted movement, not only internationally, but also domestically. Michelle has credited being involved in these events as having not only “helped in turning the business around” but also as being instrumental in “taking the business to a whole new level”.

Outcome

TheVirtual Meet the Buyer events have helped Wine In A Glass secure deals with several overseas partners across the globe dramatically increasing the capabilities and profitability of the business. As a direct result of the FIAL events, Wine In A Glass is now shipping 40-foot containers of product to a major supplier in South Korea each month. New relationships have also been forged with buyers in Hong Kong, having the potential to see Wine In A Glass spread throughout Asia. But it hasn’t stopped there, with Polish buyers also enthusiastic about pushing the product into the European market. There is also great potential with export deals with Sri Lankan and Maldivian markets, which has further opened up communication channels to other suppliers, including a major international airline. This flow-on effect from the FIAL events and connections established at Virtual Meet the Buyer events has had a significant impact on the business, with demand for the single serve, individual beverages increasing even further worldwide amidst COVID-19 fears. Overall the initial establishment of relationships with buyers through the online meetings, facilitated by FIAL has been a success for Wine in a Glass, with Michelle Anderson-Sims highlighting this impact saying, “Working with FIAL has given us a great opportunity to reach markets that we would not been able to on our own”.

Since then, the business has grown into a thriving enterprise, employing over 120 people, while being stocked in Coles and Woolworths across Eastern Australia and exporting to over five countries.

Sales and Marketing Manager, Bronson Garlick highlights one massive string in Garlo’s Pies bow is its ability to export overseas, being one of a limited number of Australian beef pie companies able to do so. The need to capitalise on such a unique opportunity is not lost on the company, with the continual expansion into overseas markets a major goal of the business for the coming years. With a rich company culture and story to tell, Garlo’s Pies focuses on successfully portraying these values to potential new buyers and ensuring that they understand the core principles of the family-run business. However, the company has sometimes been caught on how best to communicate with potential buyers the unique ‘Aussie’ qualities of their company, whilst also ensuring the pitch presented is uniquely tailored to individual buyers needs and requirements. This establishment of meaningful connections has been further complicated by the business being continually approached by inexperienced and often irrelevant overseas buyers, impacting on the quality of conversations that occur.

Solution

By being involved with FIAL through various trade shows and Meet the Buyer events over the years, Garlo’s Pies have increased their ability to effectively showcase their products and brand to potential buyers. Bronson Garlick described these events as “good learning experiences for sure, allowing us to dip our toe in the water on how to structure our presentation, making it engaging and interesting for potential buyers”. With a lot of export enquiries that are made directly to the company described as “very green”, FIAL offers a solution, focusing on setting up personalised meetings, with suitable, certified and experienced buyers, distributors and suppliers. Bronson described the advantages of such meetings, with them being “more structured, with the buyers participating because they really want to, which does increase the overall chance of success”. This was evident when Garlo’s Pies recently attended a FIAL-run VirtualMeet the Buyer initiative, whereby they met with several interested buyers from Korea. With talks still in progress, it gave them insight into just how many opportunities exist when connections with top quality buyers are established.

Outcome

This overarching increase of quality of connections has been a huge positive for Garlo’s Pies. By participating in a range of FIAL events, the company has further streamlined and refined their product offerings to buyers, being described as by Bronson Garlick as “a good way to develop a pitch and not just have a general brochure to present” while “helping us get fully export ready and giving us a closer to 100% chance of winning buyers over and being able to eventually supply to them”. With a well-developed pitch showcasing the brands character and quality products, and a portfolio of ready and experienced buyers to communicate with- there’s no limit to where Garlo’s Pies will be popping up next.

Following this, SalDoce Fine Foods decided to take the next step and successfully applied to showcase their product offerings as part of a FIAL stand at multiple international trade shows including Gulfood in the Middle East, Food Hotel Asia in Singapore, and Food Hotel China. Trade Shows provide businesses with logistical and financial support to showcase their products in international markets. “FIAL provides a great platform to participate in trade shows. Normally they aren’t affordable, so attending with FIAL not only makes it more affordable, but it generates a better presence from an Australian perspective than if you were at a stand by yourself,” said Martin.

SalDoce Fine Foods also participated in two FIAL-led Virtual Meet the Buyer events with interested prospective buyers from China and the Gulf region. After operating for five years, the company’s goals shifted from establishing a brand in China to increasing the product range and export portfolio. Opening a manufacturing facility in Victoria was also on the horizon to centralise operations within the business. In 2020, the turbulent nature of COVID-19 made logistics and interacting with international buyers incredibly challenging. FIAL’s Virtual Meet the Buyer events ‘sparked their interest’ due to travel restrictions and an inability to network and reach international markets.

Solution

Developed by the Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre, trading as FIAL, the Virtual Meet the Buyer events provide export-ready Australian food and agribusinesses with the opportunity to secure a one-to-one virtual meeting with interested buyers in key markets around the globe. Since establishment, Australia’s First Choice was subscribed to the FIAL e-newsletter, and when the Virtual Meet the Buyer events were advertised the company could not pass up the chance of reaching new international markets and buyers.

Australia’s First Choice presented their product offerings in three of FIAL’s events. At each event, they were sought out by five to six buyers from Jiangsu Province China, Vietnam and Asia. Australia’s First Choice Manager, Damian Gauci, explained the Virtual Meet the Buyer events as an invaluable way to “gain knowledge and networking opportunities in new markets without the need for travel”.

Outcome

Australia’s First Choice unlocked many growth opportunities through FIAL’s Virtual Meet the Buyer events. In Vietnam and China, the company secured several new exporting deals, which increased the company’s market knowledge, export portfolio and exposure to new clients and customers. Described by Slim Secret’s Jamie Thurin as “pivotal and instrumental in helping to overcome these obstacles and begin to establish these ever-important relationships”.

Outcome

By participating in Trade Shows and Virtual Meet the Buyer events over the years, Slim Secrets has established contact with many overseas suppliers that would not have been possible without the extensive network of industry contacts provided by FIAL. This has allowed business to grow and deals to continue despite travel restrictions. And while they “don’t always come away with partner, distributor or supplier” in the short term, the process has acted as a catalyst for the formation of invaluable relationships with the potential for fresh opportunities as the brand evolves and consumer markets develop over time.

And with new connections made at Virtual Meet the Buyer events resulting in samples being sent as far afield as Asian petrol station chains, there’s no telling where Slim Secrets will be expanding to next.
