About the Course 

Held over three sessions, the Cluster Director Training course will focus on what is different for a board of a cluster organisation where collaboration and entrepreneurship are key elements and what it means to be a non-executive (as opposed to an executive role).


The course will provide cluster directors with a suite of tools and techniques to implement good practices and to be more effective as a leader in order to deliver the cluster strategy, improving the outcomes for the organisation and associated businesses.

Facilitator

Madeline Smith - Director, SmithKelvin 

Madeline specialises in strategy and evaluation for clusters, innovation and complex collaborations. Her consultancy, SmithKelvin, focuses on support for clusters, innovation and collaborative projects, working with cluster and government partners including the Flemish Government, Enterprise Ireland, and the World Bank.


Madeline brings experience from public, private and academic sectors, having started her career in the food and drink industry. She was previously Head of Innovation at EKOS (an independent economic and social development consultancy practice) leading their work on evaluation and strategy development of innovation and cluster policy. Prior to joining EKOS she worked for Scottish Enterprise developing their approach to clusters and industries strategy.


She combines her consultancy, with a role as Head of Strategy for the Innovation School at The Glasgow School of Art, where she leads the development and delivery of a portfolio of programmes using design to build the innovative capacity of businesses, public sector organisations and communities. She is a Co-I for the UKRI Circular Economy Hub, leading on evaluation and impact, and sits on the NHS Scotland Innovation Steering group.  


She is an active member of TCI (The Competitiveness Institute), the global cluster and innovation practitioners’ network, was board member from 2013 - 2019 and leads their International Working Group on Cluster Evaluation. She sits on the board of a number of triple helix collaborations including the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre and the Digital Health Institute, and on the Clusters and Innovation groups for SOWEC (Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council).
